Prime Minister Skerrit Congratulates St. Vincent’s New Government

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has extended warm congratulations to Dr. Godwin Friday and his party on their decisive election victory in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Speaking this morning, the Prime Minister praised the peaceful conduct of the polls and said Dominica looks forward to strengthened cooperation at the OECS, CARICOM, and bilateral levels. Mr. Skerrit also paid tribute to outgoing Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, noting his longstanding contribution to regional development and international engagement. Reflecting on the results, the Prime Minister said the election underscores a simple but powerful lesson: politics is about people. He stressed that elected officials must remain visible, accessible, and connected to their constituents. According to Mr. Skerrit, voters will withdraw their support if they feel neglected, regardless of how long a party has been in office. He added that while projects are important, what matters most is how leaders make people feel—whether citizens believe their government cares and is trying on their behalf. St. Vincent and the Grenadines has entered a new political era after the New Democratic Party (NDP) clinched victory in the 2025 general election, ending the Unity Labour Party’s (ULP) 24-year grip on power. Dr. Godwin Friday, the NDP leader, is set to become the country’s seventh prime minister since independence in 1979.
