The justice system in Dominica is seeing major improvements, with new magistrates appointed, expanded court sittings, and technology upgrades aimed at reducing case backlogs. Chief Magistrate Candia Carrette-George says the Night Court, reintroduced in September 2025, is already delivering results, with more than 80 matters disposed of in just over three months. The Night Court operates into the evening to improve access to justice and ease congestion in the regular court schedule. To strengthen judicial capacity, new magistrates have been sworn in. Case management hearings will also be introduced in January 2026, ensuring matters are trial-ready before being scheduled, reducing delays and adjournments. In addition, the Coroner’s Court is set for expansion, with plans for daily sittings once a dedicated courtroom is established. The courts will also benefit from digital recording systems provided under the United Nations Development Programme Peace Justice Project. Once installed, the systems will allow verbatim electronic recording of proceedings, with full implementation expected by the end of the first quarter of 2026.
