The Dominica Association of Persons Living with Disabilities has emphasized the urgent need for improved accessibility for persons with disabilities across the island. Speaking on Kairi FM’s Heng Program as part of Disability Enlightenment Week activities, Executive Director of the DAPD Earnica Esprit highlighted the importance of access to both education and public facilities. She says, while there has been progress since Hurricane Maria, including more ramps in public buildings, many still fail to provide access to upper floors or comply with proper design standards. Treasurer of the DAPD Nathalie Murphy welcomed government’s initiative to make Thibaud Primary School a special needs-friendly facility, and called for sufficient trained staff and resources to ensure inclusive education. This week marks Disability Enlightenment Week in Dominica, leading up to the International Day of Persons with Disabilities today.
