Gov’t Hands Over 22 Hurricane-Resilient Homes

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has handed over 22 hurricane-resilient homes to families across Bellevue-Chopin, Bagatelle, Grand Bay, Roseau, and other communities. The homes, built entirely by Dominican contractors, were delivered under the Housing Recovery Project, the first homeowner-driven housing model in the Caribbean. Speaking at the handover ceremony on Monday, Minister for Finance Dr. Irving McIntyre noted the handover is a central pillar of national development, with safe shelter recognized as a human right and a foundation for social and economic progress. During the ceremony, the Ministry also recognized the outstanding work of top contractors Ronan David, Sherman Boston, and Yankee Oliver, whose homes meet modern building codes and can withstand category five hurricanes. The Housing Recovery Project, supported by the government and the World Bank, allows beneficiaries to select contractors and manage construction on their own properties. Preparations are already underway for the next handover, scheduled for Thursday, November 20, in the Kalinago Territory, where 31 more families will receive keys to their new homes.
