Dominica takes another step to Strengthen Creole Language Teaching in Primary Schools

The Ministry of Education has received over 100 copies of Annou Apwann Kwéyòl, a new publication aimed at strengthening the teaching of the Creole language in Dominica’s primary schools. The book, developed by the Konmite Pou Etid Kweyol, was written by Sonia Magloire Akpa, Magalie Celestine, and Charlene White-Christian. It is designed to help students learn both the spoken and written forms of Creole and includes exercises, quizzes, a mini-Creole-English dictionary, and sections on Dominica’s rich culture. President of KEK, Mr. Raymond Lawrence, highlighted the importance of preserving Creole, a key part of Dominica’s heritage and culture. He emphasized that the books, together with a curriculum guide, will give teachers the tools to ensure the language thrives in schools. Minister for Education, Octavia Alfred, praised the initiative, calling the resource a working tool that will bring the Creole language into the daily lives of students, helping them connect with their heritage and national identity. The Ministry plans to expand Creole teaching alongside other national languages, such as Kokoy and Kalinago, in all primary schools, with future plans to extend the program to secondary schools and other public institutions.
