Dominica Advances Efforts to Improve School Nutrition

The Government of Dominica is stepping up efforts to promote healthier eating in schools. From November 20th to 24th, under a partnership with the Caribbean Public Health Agency and PAHO, local authorities will receive guidance and training to implement new nutrition standards for foods and drinks sold or served in schools. The initiative comes in response to rising childhood overweight and obesity rates, which now affect one in three children in the Caribbean. Officials say the program will help schools provide more nutritious meals, improve food safety, and strengthen the role of school food providers in promoting healthy habits. The Ministry of Health says this initiative is a key step toward reducing obesity and non-communicable diseases by 30 percent by 2030, and ensuring schools support the healthy growth and development of children.
