CARICOM condemned recent Guatemalan military incursions into Belize’s Sarstoon River

CARICOM has condemned recent Guatemalan military incursions into Belize’s Sarstoon River, describing them as blatant violations of Belize’s sovereignty. Between September 10–13, Guatemalan forces reportedly entered Belizean territory, raised their flag, attempted to ram a Belizean vessel, and blocked navigation. The regional body warned such actions risk escalating into armed conflict but commended Belize’s restrained response. CARICOM urged Guatemala to cease illegal military activities, respect ongoing ICJ proceedings over its territorial claim, and work with Belize and the OAS to establish a cooperation mechanism for the Sarstoon. Reaffirming its unwavering support for Belize, CARICOM stressed its commitment to maintaining the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.
