Stakeholders from Barbados’ health, disaster management, and climate sectors met earlier this week to validate the country’s Health National Adaptation Plan, or HNAP — a blueprint to make Barbados’ health system more resilient to climate change.
The two-day workshop, held at the Pan American Health Organization from June 3rd to 4th, was part of a regional EU and PAHO-supported initiative to strengthen climate-resilient health systems in the Caribbean.
Barbados’ Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Kenneth George, described the HNAP as a roadmap to protect vulnerable populations and ensure continuity of essential services during climate-related events.
The HNAP includes over 80 targeted actions, a full budget, and a monitoring framework. Barbados now joins nine other Caribbean nations developing similar plans with PAHO’s support, as part of a wider effort to build stronger, healthier, and climate-ready communities across the region.
