Dominica’s first geothermal power plant is just weeks away from going live, marking a major breakthrough in the nation’s drive toward clean, affordable energy. The 10-megawatt facility at Laudat, built by Ormat Technologies, is now in the final commissioning stage after years of work in challenging volcanic terrain. Energy Minister Dr. Vince Henderson says the plant will soon link directly to the DOMLEC grid, delivering geothermal power much like the island’s hydro sources. Funded through a mix of government investment, Caribbean Development Bank loans, and support from the Green Climate Fund, the project is also providing training and jobs for young Dominicans. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says the plant sets the stage for Dominica’s push toward 100-percent renewable energy by 2030 and could even open doors for future electricity exports to islands such as Martinique.
