A bipartisan group of U.S. senators, including Democrats have announced plans to file a new War Powers Resolution if the Trump administration carries out military strikes in Venezuela. They warned that unauthorized action would be a “colossal and costly mistake” risking U.S. service members’ lives. The concerns come amid reports that the US Defense Secretary has authorized strikes targeting Venezuelan boats, potentially killing survivors—raising legal and ethical questions. In the past three months, U.S. forces conducted at least 21 strikes in the Caribbean and Pacific, killing at least 83 people, as Trump escalates military pressure on President Nicolas Maduro. Lawmakers have repeatedly attempted—and failed—to force Trump to seek congressional approval for these operations, citing the constitutional requirement that only Congress can declare war.
