The Ministry of Health, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, hosted a focus group discussion aimed at strengthening food security and reducing the impact of non-communicable diseases in Dominica. The session, supported by the University of Florida, brought together health professionals, agricultural officials, educators, and technical officers to explore how locally produced foods can play a greater role in preventing and managing NCDs.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Kyra Paul, highlighted the growing burden of NCDs and the need for stronger collaboration across sectors. She noted that Dominica has the agricultural capacity to supply much of the nutritious food its population needs, but must improve access, dietary practices, and community education. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Ryan Anselm, emphasized the ministry’s mandate to ensure food and nutrition security. He also called for incentives and policies to make healthy foods more affordable and appealing, especially to young people.
