PAHO calls for regional action as the Americas lose measles elimination status

The Pan American Health Organization says the Americas has lost its measles-free status after sustained transmission was confirmed in Canada. PAHO’s regional commission met in Mexico City this month and determined that measles has been circulating in Canada for more than a year—ending the region’s elimination status for the third time. So far this year, more than 12,500 cases have been reported across ten countries, with the vast majority in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Twenty-eight people have died, and outbreaks are ongoing in seven countries, mostly in under-vaccinated communities. Infants under one year remain the most affected age group. PAHO says low vaccination coverage is driving the surge. In 2024, only 79 percent of children in the region received the second dose of the MMR vaccine—far short of the 95 percent needed to prevent outbreaks. PAHO is urging countries to strengthen vaccination efforts, improve surveillance, and respond quickly to suspected cases. Canada is now developing an action plan to halt transmission and eventually regain its measles-free status. PAHO’s director says the setback is reversible, emphasizing that with cooperation and high vaccination rates, the Americas can eliminate measles once again.
